What is Menopause?

The menopause is a natural process that begins in women as they age and is associated with a decrease in the estrogen hormone. Menopause is diagnosed after a period of one year without menstruation following the last menstrual bleeding. While the average age of menopause worldwide is 51, in our country, it can be observed to occur as early as 47.

The menopausal period is divided into three stages:

  1. Perimenopause: This is the period when symptoms indicating the approach of menopause emerge. It lasts for about 4 years, during which ovulation continues, but with a reduced frequency.

  2. Menopause: This stage begins after 12 months have passed since the last menstrual bleeding. Fertility and estrogen hormone production cease due to the loss of ovarian function during this period.

  3. Postmenopause: The period after menopause is referred to as the postmenopausal period. This phase poses risks for the development of osteoporosis (bone loss) and heart diseases.

Risks during the Menopausal Period include:

  • Skin, hair, and nail problems such as deterioration, dryness, shedding, wrinkles, and discoloration.

  • Psychological and mood disorders.

  • Vaginal dryness, burning, and pain.

  • Frequent urination, involuntary leakage, and pain or burning during urination.

  • Increased risk of heart and vascular diseases.

  • Increased insulin resistance.

  • Obesity, especially an increase in waist circumference.

  • Osteoporosis and fractures.

  • Joint pains, degenerations, and arthritis.

  • Neurodegenerative diseases such as dementia and Parkinson's.
