The condition known colloquially as "cervical erosion," termed cervicitis in medical language, is the inflammation of the cervical tissue and is a commonly encountered gynecological issue. These erosions appear as pink and swollen sores in the genital area. Among the primary causes are infections, frequent sexual intercourse, repeated childbirth, tampon usage, hormonal changes, and reactions to certain chemical products. Symptoms include abnormal vaginal discharge, bleeding depending on the size of the sore, itching, burning in the vagina, pain during intercourse, postcoital bleeding, burning during urination, and lower back pain.
Women of all ages with an active sex life are susceptible to cervicitis. Cervicitis can be detected during routine gynecological examinations. Additionally, biopsy, colposcopy, and smear tests can be used to enhance the reliability of the diagnosis.
Treatment methods for cervicitis vary depending on the condition of the sore. These treatment methods include cauterization (burning), cryotherapy (freezing), and laser therapy. The goal of these treatments is to destroy and eliminate the tissue causing the sore. Generally, anesthesia is not required for these three treatment methods. Improvement is typically observed about 6-7 weeks after treatment.
